  • Give us an insight into your main characters. What do they do that is so special?

Our goal is always to write about strong women and the men who love them. We try to show strength in our characters in all forms. You can be quiet, and strong. You can be brassy and strong. Women don’t just come in one flavor of strength!

Diamo uno sguardo ai Vostri personaggi principali. Che cosa hanno di così speciale?

Il nostro obiettivo è sempre quello di scrivere di donne forti e di uomini che le amano. Cerchiamo di mostrare la forza nei nostri personaggi in tutte le sue forme. Si può essere equilibrati e forti. Si può essere sfacciate e forti. Le donne non devono mostrare solo un aspetto di questa caratteristica!!! 

  • What are you working on at the minute?

Our next book is out in the US in June, and is called Dating You Hating You – it’s a fun romance about two talent agents in Hollywood who start to become romantically involved and then find out they’re competing for the same job! We’re drafting our second standalone now, about a woman who marries a man to help him get the job of his dreams in New York . . .

 A che cosa state lavorando in questo momento?

Il nostro prossimo libro uscirà negli Stati Uniti nel mese di giugno e si intitolerà Dating You Hating You– è una divertente storia d’amore di due talent scouts a Hollywood che si lasciano coinvolgere sentimentalmente e poi scoprono di essere in lizza per lo stesso lavoro! Attualmente siamo in piena stesura del nostro secondo standalone, che parla di una donna che sposa un uomo per aiutarlo a ottenere il lavoro dei suoi sogni a New York… 

  • How does the writing process work with a co-author team? Does one of you work on one aspect of the story and the other works elsewhere, or is it truly a collaborative effort?

Our process varies from book to book. Sometimes we split the work based on character POV. Other times we write the chapters and combine, and then revise revise revise revise. We’ve learned that great books are made in revisions.

 Come funziona il processo di stesura, di elaborazione e scrittura in un un team di co-autori? C’è forse una di voi al lavoro su un aspetto della storia e l’altra altrove, o procedete di pari passo?

Il processo varia da libro a libro. A volte abbiamo diviso il lavoro basandoci sul POV. Altre volte abbiamo scritto i capitoli e in seguito li abbiamo assemblati per poi rivedere rivedere rivedere rivedere. Abbiamo imparato che i migliori libri sono ottenuti con le revisioni. 

  • How did you two team up? Did you know each other previously?

We met while writing fanfiction online. We were each fans of the others writing, and when Lo organized a panel at SDCC on fanworks, she invited Christina to be on it. We hit it off right away.

 Come è nata la Vostra collaborazione? Vi conoscevate in precedenza?

Ci siamo conosciute mentre scrivevamo una fanfiction online. Eravamo l’una fan dell’altra, e quando Lo ha organizzato un dibattito al SDCC(San Diego Comic-On) sui fanworks, Christina ha invitato Lo a parteciparci subito.

Ci siamo piaciute subito. 

  • Why did you do decide to collaborate?

We wrote a short story for a contest together and had so much fun that we decided to write a book.

Come mai avete deciso di collaborare?

Abbiamo scritto un breve racconto per un concorso insieme e ci siamo divertite così tanto che abbiamo deciso di scrivere un libro. 

  • You started with the Beautiful Bastard series and what made you decide to start a new series (Wild Seasons) while during another one?

On our first trip to Paris we stopped at a store to buy each other a present. The woman working there was from Southern California, and had moved to France with her husband, a Frenchman. When she learned we were writers she leaned in and whispered, “There’s a book there, I think.” Inspiration struck and that night we sat in a coffee shop and loosely outlined the book that would become Sweet Filthy Boy, book 1 of the Wild Seasons.

Avete iniziato con la serie Beautiful Bastard, che cosa Vi ha spinto ad iniziare una nuova serie (Wild Seasons) in contemporanea?

Durante il nostro primo viaggio a Parigi, ci siamo fermate in un negozio per comprarci rispettivamente un regalo. La ragazza che ci lavorava era originaria del Sud California e si era trasferita in Francia con il marito, un francese. Quando ha saputo che eravamo autrici si è fatta avanti sussurrando, “C’è un libro lì, credo.” Ci ha colto l’ispirazione e la notte ci siamo sedute in un Café a buttar giù vagamente le linee generali del libro che sarebbe diventato Sweet Filthy Boy (Dolce e selvaggio ed. it.), il primo della serie Wild.  

  • What is it like to finish a series and to see this whole journey of these characters come to an end?

It’s bittersweet. On the one hand we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited to move on to new adventures, but it can feel like saying goodbye to old friends, too.

 Com’è completare una serie e vedere questo intero viaggio, quello di questi personaggi, giungere alla fine?

 È agrodolce. Da un lato siamo orgogliose di ciò che abbiamo compiuto ed entusiaste di passare a nuove avventure, ma ci si sente anche come se stessimo dicendo addio a vecchi amici.  

  • Do you have a favorite couple that you’ve enjoyed writing the most? Pippa and Jensen? Chloe and Bennet, Sara and Max, Will and Hanna, Niall and Ruby?

We love different characters for different reasons. Bennett comes really naturally to Lo so she has a lot of fun with him and Chloe. Christina could write Ansel forever.  I think we both agree that there was a fierce, protective love for Tanner and Sebastian which is our next YA book, Autoboyography, out in English in September.

 Avete una coppia preferita, di cui Vi è piaciuto particolarmente raccontare la storia? Pippa e Jensen? Chloe e Bennet, Sara e Max, Will e Hanna, Niall e Ruby? 

Li amiamo tutti per diversi motivi. Bennett è venuto così in modo naturale, Lo si è divertita un sacco con lui e Chloe. Christina potrebbe scrivere di Ansel per sempre. Siamo entrambe d’accordo che da parte di entrambe c’è un amore feroce, protettivo per Tanner e Sebastian, che sono la coppia del nostro prossimo libro YA, Autoboyography, in uscita in lingua nel mese di settembre. 

  • When you develop characters, do you already know who they are before you begin writing or do you let them develop as you go?

We have an idea of who they are, but they tend to develop along with the story, which is why we revise so much when we are done drafting.

Quando sviluppate i personaggi, sapete già chi sono prima di iniziare a scrivere o lasciate che si definiscano man mano nella stesura?

Abbiamo un’idea di chi sono, ma tendono a svilupparsi insieme con la storia, motivo per cui spendiamo così tanto tempo nella revisione quando abbiamo finito la stesura. 

  • Out of the protagonists you’ve written about so far, which one do you feel you relate to the most?

Christina: Probably Hanna and London.

Lo: Harlow, Lola, and Bennett.

Dei protagonisti che avete creato finora, a quale Vi sentite più affini?

Christina: Probabilmente Hanna e London. 
Lo: Harlow, Lola e Bennett. 

  • If you were deserted on an island, which three people would you want to have with you? Why? (Criteria: fictional characters from your book)

We would take Will because he can be our inventor, Oliver because he’d be resourceful, and Chloe because she’s determined enough to find a way off the island.

Immaginate di essere su un’isola deserta, quali personaggi (3) vorreste avere con voi? Perché? (Criteri: personaggi immaginari dei Vostri romanzi)

 Will perché è pieno di idee, Oliver perché  pieno di risorse e Chloe perché ha abbastanza determinazione da trovare il modo di portarci via dall’isola. 

  • When did you decide to become a writer?

Lo has written her entire life in one form or another. Christina didn’t start writing until she was in her early thirties. We decided to become writers when we had stories in our heads that we simply couldn’t ignore anymore!

 Quando avete deciso di diventare scrittori?

 Lo scrive da sempre in un modo o in un altro. Christina non ha iniziato a scrivere fino a quando non era sulla trentina. Abbiamo deciso di diventare scrittrici, quando abbiamo avuto storie nelle nostre teste che semplicemente non potevamo ignorare più ‘! 

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

As coauthors we always need to outline to ensure that we’re on the same page, so to speak!  

 Lavorate ad una scaletta o a una trama o preferite vedere dove Vi porta un’idea?

Come coautori abbiamo sempre bisogno di delineare tutto per assicurarci di essere sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda, per intenderci!  

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

This is hard to answer because we are probably too close to our own writing to see it clearly. We hope that we’ve become better structural writers, and have grown in terms of how our prose flows, and the rhythm of our writing!

Che ne pensate del Vostro percorso creativo?

È difficile rispondere, perché probabilmente siamo troppo coinvolte per vederlo chiaramente. Speriamo di essere diventate autrici migliori nella struttura e di essere cresciute da un punto di vista dello stile e del lessico, che la nostra prosa scorra e abbia ritmo! 

  • Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Christina: I’m a slower writer, so I’d love to be able to get ideas down faster.

Lo: I just wish there were more hours in each workday.

Che cosa trovate particolarmente impegnativo nello scrivere?

Christina: sono lenta, quindi mi piacerebbe essere in grado di rendere più velocemente le idee. 
Lo: Vorrei solo avere più ore in ogni giornata lavorativa. 

  • What is the hardest thing about writing?

There are the usual things like speed, finding enough time to get all the things done, or just making sure we’re getting better with each book, but sometimes it’s as simple as struggling to shut out the chaos of real life and be creative.

 Qual è la cosa più difficile della scrittura?

Ci sono le solite cose come la velocità, trovare abbastanza tempo per riuscire a far tutto, o anche fare meglio con ogni libro, ma a volte è semplicemente lottare per chiudere fuori il caos della vita reale ed esser creativi.  

  • Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

We’re full time writers so we get kids off to school and head into the office. 

Avete un momento speciale per scrivere, come è strutturata la Vostra giornata?

Siamo scrittori a tempo pieno, quindi bambini a scuola e testa in ufficio. 

  • If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?

Christina: Every time I read The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson I’m struck by how every single word in that book is exactly where it should be, no more, no less.

Lo: The masterpieces of The Goldfinch and A Little Life sometimes seem beyond me. Just the patience it takes to tell those types of stories and build the characters over time—I’d love to think I could do that someday.

Se poteste essere l’autore di qualsiasi libro, quale scegliereste e perché?

Christina: ogni volta che leggo The Sky Is Everywhere di Jandy Nelson sono colpita da come ogni singola parola in quel libro sia esattamente dove dovrebbe essere, di più, non meno. 
Lo: I capolavori The Goldfinch e A Little Life. Serve pazienza per raccontare un tipo di storia del genere e costruire quei personaggi nel corso del tempo — mi piacerebbe pensare di poterlo farlo un giorno. 

  • What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Make time to write and protect it. Write write write and when you have something you’re proud of, give it to someone you trust for constructive critique.

 Che consigli dareste agli aspiranti scrittori?

Prendetevi del tempo per scrivere e proteggetelo. Scrivere scrivere scrivere e quando avete qualcosa di cui esser fieri, affidatelo a qualcuno di cui vi fidate per una critica costruttiva.
